Mechanic assaults daughter with red-hot iron


A 36-year-old auto mechanic and father, who allegedly assaulted his 16-year-old daughter with a red-hot iron on her body, on Tuesday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused, Mukaila Ogunbona, who resides at No.18, Ajenifuja Street, Ilaje, in Bariga area of Lagos, is standing trial on a charge of assault occasioning harm.

The prosecutor, ASP Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 28 at his residence.

Anyanwu said, “The girl left her mother’s shop to play with her friends and the mother reported her to the accused when they got home.

“The accused beat the girl with a horsewhip and also used hot iron to assault her on her laps, shoulders, jaw and left ear which caused her bodily harm.

“The accused asked a nurse to come to the house to treat the girl instead of taking her to the hospital.

“A friend of the girl told her that they have started test in school, then she rushed to school for two days so that she does not miss more tests.

“When the girl got to school, the school officials discovered the serious injuries and they decided to report the case to the Office of the Public Defender in Surulere.”

He noted that the offence contravened Section 243 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 243 stipulates a seven-year jail term for grievous harm.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Soladoye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to July 13 for mention.
