Anambra govt to chase away non-indigene Okada riders from state —Ejikeme

Anambra State government may have concluded plans to chase out of the state non- indigenes operating commercial motorcycles over alleged activities capable of causing a break down of law and order.

Commissioner for Transport, Dr Ifeanyichukwu Ejikeme, gave the indication while addressing newsmen in his office on the activities of the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency under his ministry.
He said those already blacklisted were Okada riders from Abakaliki, Nsukka, Calabar and Kogi.
According to him, Okada riders from these states are responsible for incessant violent crisis in the state.
“ I tell you that the crisis you see in the state emanating from the Okada riders are from non indigenes especially those Kogi who have been engaging us in communal war, destroying our properties and killing our people over the orient petroleum sited at Anambra east local government area of the state.
“ There should be decorum amongst the Okada men and it is unfortunate that those who graduated from Okada to Keke (tricycle) are the same people and have the same methodology of operation,” he said.
He said government of Dr Willie Obiano had good package for them but failed to appreciate it.
He said they rather chose to be reckless in their operations which had led to the death and maiming of  passengers and passersby.
He said because government could no longer fold its arms and watch the activities of the Okada riders, a policy that banned them from major roads and expressways was enunciated.
“ We are trying to protect them but they do not know. There are many deaths in the state as a result of their recklessness. The same policy obtains in other states and Anambra can not be an exception,” he said.
Ejikeme said government had already purchased saloon cars that would be given out to commercial motorcycle operators and Keke riders on hire purchase to cushion the effect of the ban.
